Description
OFFERED FOR AQUISITION TO A QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP A stunning and musically fabulous Theorbo/Baroque Lute after Dieffopruchar by the late and legendary maker Robert Lundberg. This instrument is without a doubt Lundberg's masterwork. I commissioned this instrument from Bob in 1983 and it is featured throughout his book "Historical Lute Construction" widely held as the definitive text on historically accurate lute building. The stringing is currently in Dm tuning but of course will tune in reentrant in G with no problems. It has 76cm on the fingerboard and 120cm on the extension. It is currently single strung in the basses but can be double strung through the 7th course. The instrument is completely built of ebony and ivory, not faux ivory or plastic but CITES certified and legal pure white elephant ivory. The CITES treaty allows a very small amount of ivory to enter the market and certifies that it is not from poached or illegally killed animals. Bob and I both had strong ethical feelings regarding the illegal killing of African elephants and we went to great lengths to make sure we had ivory from natural deaths or sadly necessary government kills. This real ivory composes the spacers, outlines, binding and all the pegs. There is no plastic or faux ivory on the instrument. The ebony is very black Gabon wood with very little figure in it and contrasts spectacularly with the ivory. Due to additional restrictions and the state of African commerce, this lute could not be duplicated today. The soundboard is a piece of German spruce from Bob's collection and was aged almost 40 years when he made the lute, in 1984. The rosette is a knot of Leonardo and is sized for the instrument and it's robust bass strings. The Instrument comes in the pictured fitted custom case, also by Robert Lundberg, and includes a playing strap. Simply put, this is a true virtuoso instrument for the professional player. The rich sound and projection are perfectly suited to advanced performance and the visual impact of the instrument is unsurpassed. Bob said that this may be his best instrument in a wonderful career. Again, due to the rarity of just the materials, not to mention the hand of a man regarded by many as the Stradivari of the lute, this lute could not be duplicated today at any price.
